Considered one of the world’s most breathtakingly colourful birds, the Lilac Breasted Roller can be found perched atop trees in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula. Its diet consists of insects, small birds & reptiles which it spots from the high vantage point which it favours.Unsurprisingly, both Botswana and Kenya have adopted this gorgeous creature as their national bird.

A velvet cushion that contains most of the colours found on the multi- coloured Lilac Breasted Roller. The pattern pulls all the colours together to exude the softly faded look of a treasured Oriental rug.

About: Designer Anjali Hood started life in the magical circus that is Bombay (now Mumbai). It was here that Anjali discovered how bird feathers of different shapes and colours can combine to create such a variety of beautiful patterns. A single bird can have several ‘outfits’ depending on the seasons and stage. For male birds the mating season sees them in their finest regalia, and the colours and patterns of young birds can vastly differ from those of the adults.

Anjali’s attention to the plight of birds was raised when she read of the wanton massacre of Amur Falcons in Nagaland (northeastern India) a couple of years ago. The birds migrate annually between Siberia and east Africa, but stop en-route in Nagaland. The Nagas had placed large nets to capture the birds on their stopover, and had killed around 100,000 within the space of one week.

And as her designs are inspired by bird and feather patterns, it was natural for her to tie up with a suitable bird charity. BirdLife International fitted the bill (no pun intended) perfectly as they fund programmes for the conservation of birds and their habitats worldwide.

An initial collection of six cushions are currently available for purchase. With the sale of each item a donation will be made to BirdLife International. The charity not only protects birds but supports those with a keen interest in birding as an activity. Helping to appreciate the delicate balance of nature could be instrumental in saving the wider environment.
